Childhood & Early Life

Francis Ford Coppola was born in Detroit, Michigan, on 7 April 1939. He is son of Carmine Coppola and mother Italia Coppola. His father was a flutist at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has an older brother was August Coppola, and his younger sister is actress Talia Shire. When he studied at Hofstra College in 1955 with a major in theater arts. There Coppola was awarded a scholarship in playwriting. In 1960, when Coppola studying in UCLA Film School, he directed a short horror film called The Two Christophers.

 

Career

Coppola made his first feature-length black-and-white horror-thriller film Dementia 13 (1963). Coppola co-wrote the scripts for drama film "This Property Is Condemned (1966)" and epic black-and-white war film "Is Paris Burning? (1966)".  Coppola's next comedy film You're a Big Boy Now was released in 1966. Following the success of You're a Big Boy Now (1966), Coppola made musical fantasy film "Finian's Rainbow". In 1969, Coppola made film The Rain People and the film won the Golden Shell at the 1969 San Sebastian Film Festival.

 

In 1970, Coppola co-wrote the script for Patton, for this film he earned his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Coppola's next crime film The Godfather was released in 1972. The became one of the highest-grossing movies in history and brought him an Oscar for writing the screenplay with Mario Puzo The film was a Best Picture Academy Award-winner, and also brought Coppola a Best Director Oscar nomination.For this film Coppola received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Golden Globe Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay. In 1990, Coppola released final chapter of The Godfather series: The Godfather Part III. In 1992 Coppola directed Bram Stoker's Dracula became a box-office hit, making it the 15th highest-grossing film of the year.
