Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson is an American actor, film director, screenwriter and producer. He is famous for his action hero roles.

Childhood & Early Life

Mel Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York, 3 January 1956.He is second son of Irish descent writer Hutton Gibson and Irish-born Anne Patricia.One of Gibson's younger brothers, Donal, is also an actor. Gibson was educated by members of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, when he was in high school at St Leo's Catholic College in Wahroonga, New South Wales. Then he went to the University of New South Wales in Sydney.Gibson studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.

 

Career

Gibson and actress Judy Davis played the leads in Romeo and Juliet, when he was student at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, and Gibson played the role of Queen Titania. After college, Mel had a few stints on stage and starred in a few TV shows.Gibson made his film debut in the film Summer City 1977), when he was student at the NIDA. Gibson then played the title role in the 1979 film Mad Max.

 

After Mad Max, Gibson played role in the film Tim (1979). Gibson appeared in Australian television series The Sullivans as a guest roles. In thistelevision series Gibson played role as naval lieutenant Ray Henderson.Gibson played leads role in the World War I drama Gallipoli (1981), which earned Gibson a Best Actor Award from the Australian Film Institute.

 

The sequel Mad Max 2 (1982) was his first film to hit in America.Gibson appeared in Peter Weir's romantic thriller "The Year of Living Dangerously" (1982) and The Bounty (1984). Gibson appeared in the Mad Max BeyondThunderdome (1985), which for he earned his first million dollar salary.Gibson's first American film was drama film The River (1984). Gibson appeared in the Lethal Weapon (1987), Tequila Sunrise (1988) and Lethal Weapon 2 (1989).

 

In 1993, Gibson made his directorial debut with the movie “The Man Without a Face”.In 1995, Gibson produced, directed, and starred in Braveheart, for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Director, the Best Directo Academy Award, and the Academy Award for Best Picture. After that Gibson produced, directed in The Passion of the Christ (2004), Apocalypto (2006)and Hacksaw Ridge (2016).

 

He was the first Australian actor to be paid $1,000,000 for a film role In May 2003 Gibson was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
