is Magic Johnson?
Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr. is retired American
former professional basketball player. Johnson played professional basketball
for 13 seasons, all of them with the Los Angeles Lakers of the National
Basketball Association (NBA). Johnson was a member of the 1992 United States
men's Olympic basketball team, which won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona.
Early
Life and Childhood Days
Earvin Johnson Jr. was born on August 14, 1959 in
Lansing, Michigan, U.S. to General Motors assembly worker Earvin Sr. and school
janitor Christine. Johnson had six siblings and three half-siblings by his
father's previous marriage.
Johnson showed interest in basketball from his childhood.
His favorite basketball player was Bill Russell. His father played high school
basketball in his home state of Mississippi, Johnson also played basketball as
a child, and she grew up watching her brothers play the game.
High
school / College career
He went to the Everett High School and was one of the
school’s star basketball players.
When he was 15 year old he recorded a triple-double of 36
points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists in a game, and this incredible feat earned
him the nickname “Magic”.
After high school, he joined the Michigan State
University where he continued playing basketball. During the 1978–79 season,
Michigan State defeated Indiana State 75–64, and Johnson was voted Most
Outstanding Player of the Final Four.
Professional
career
In 1979, Johnson was drafted first overall by the Los
Angeles Lakers. Johnson averaged 18.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per
game for the season, was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Team, and was named an
NBA All-Star Game starter.
In 1981, Johnson signed a 25-year, $25 million contract
with the Lakers, which was the highest-paying contract in sports history up to
that point. In the 1981–82 season, during the championship series against the
Sixers, Johnson averaged 16.2 points on .533 shooting, 10.8 rebounds, 8.0
assists, and 2.5 steals per game.
During the 1982–83 NBA season, he averaged 16.8 points,
10.5 assists, and 8.6 rebounds per game, and earned his first All-NBA First
Team nomination. In the 1984–85 season, Johnson averaged 18.3 points, 12.6
assists, and 6.2 rebounds per game, and led the Lakers into the 1985 NBA
Finals. In the 1985–86 NBA season, Johnson averaged 18.8 points, 12.6 assists,
and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Johnson's career achievements include 3 NBA MVP Awards, 3
NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Awards, 9 NBA Finals appearances, 12 All-Star
games.
He has retired from basketball on three different
occasions. The last time following the 1995-1996 season, which was the season
before the L.A. Lakers got Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.
Johnson was honored as one of the 50 Greatest Players in
NBA History in 1996 and selected to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. He
is an actor and producer, known for Obsessed (2009), Dead Tone (2007) and Hair
Show (2004).
