Paul Thomas Anderson is an American film director, producer, screenwriter and cinematographer. His films often have family relationships as a major theme and films end abruptly or on unusual notes.
Childhood
& Early Life
Anderson was born in Studio City, Los Angeles, on 26
June 1970. He is son of Edwina and Ernie Anderson. His father Ernie Anderson
was an actor who was work at American Broadcasting Company and hosted a late
night horror show in Cleveland.Paul has five half-siblings by his father's
first marriage. He had a loving relationship with his father who encouraged him
to become a writer or director.
Career
At the age of eight, Anderson made his first film. He
made 30-minute mockumentary film The Dirk Diggler Story (1988). Anderson made a
short film Cigarettes & Coffee in 1993. Anderson direct his first
full-length feature film Hard Eight in 1996. His second feature film Boogie
Nights was released on October 10, 1997, and was a critical and commercial
success. At the 70th Academy Awards, his film Boogie Nights (1997) was
nominated for three awards, for Best Supporting Actor (Reynolds), Best
Supporting Actress (Moore), and Best Original Screenplay.
His next epic psychological drama film
"Magnolia" was released in 1997, and the film was nominated for three
Academy Awards, including for Best Supporting Actor (Tom Cruise), Best Original
Song, and Best Original Screenplay. After the success of Magnolia, Anderson
make his next romantic comedy-drama film Punch-Drunk Love (2002), and for this
film Anderson won the Best Director Award and was nominated for the Palme d'Or
award. His next film There Will Be Blood received eight Academy Award
nominations, and Anderson was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and
Best Adapted Screenplay.
His psychological drama film was released on September
14, 2012 in North America and the film received three nominations, including
for Best Leading Actor (Joaquin Phoenix), for Best Supporting Actor (Philip
Seymour Hoffman), and for Best Supporting Actress (Amy Adams). His period
neo-noir crime film Inherent Vice was released in December 2014, and the film
received two Academy Awards nominations, including for Best Adapted Screenplay
and Best Costume Design.
Anderson directed documentary film Junun in 2015,
historical drama film Phantom Thread in 2017 and coming-of-age comedy-drama
film Licorice Pizza in 2021. His film Licorice Pizza (2017) received three
Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Director.
Anderson also directed a short film "Valentine" in 2017 and
"Anima" in 2019. He is a huge fan of Robert Downey Sr and close
friends with Christopher Nolan.
